The reason I've done this is because threads that you join often end up in Frank vs the world. Now I don't know if this will work, but it's certainly worth trying. Let me know if this will work for you. If it doesn't we'll have to figure something else out because we can't go on the way we're going...

You are stuck on your couch with your souped up laptop and a copy of Mathcad wishing you could be having fun but you can't because you are driven to do math problems instead. Do you think someone like that is capable of keeping it simple? "The sense of paralysis proceeds not so much out of the...

so every model has its limits and we end up using them for limited applications. So if we can determine the exact lift that an exact shape gives us under specific conditions who cares? We are unlikely to ever see those exact conditions in real life and if the exact loop shape and size ever did occu...

Lets take a look at two casters side by side using single handed rods and a 170 stroke for the sake of argument. Both launch a long cast, one cast lands 8 feet further than the other and the strokes are identical is all respects. What did the climbing loop do for the longer cast that it did not do ...

Actually, I think we are saying the same thing. I don't see a lot of difference in how the line falls in the two casts. I do see that the loop travels forward a lot faster in the DH cast but both casts will fall 3 meters in about the same amout of time. Hal, I try and keep it simple when trying to ...

Yeah sure you were just more quick to make my point than I was. Nothing new there. Sure, and as the rod gets longer you would expect the loop to unroll faster generally speaking.

Then how would you account for the apparent consistency or lack of difference when comparing different tackle and different lengths of line being cast and the lack of difference one would expect to see or at least i would expect to see between how a climbing loop morphs and falls at 60 feet with a ...

Well I have so reason to suspect that Perkins and Gotti got it all wrong necessarily I just can't completely vouch for the comment that loops with lift of the climbing variety will travel further than a more pointed oriented loop formation that exhibits "net negative lift," according to t...

Sure I agree 100%. Thats why Steve is so consistent, more control, exactly. With the 170 you can't be as consistent. But don't tell anyone that because it does not agree with the experiment. Go figure that out now.

Actually I'd be interested in the loop formation of Steve's with the 5wt. I'm almost certain it would not at all resemble a 170 morphing loop and imagine it to be simply a a very pointed loop, which as Noel pointed out in their paper... Well, it says what it says about pointed loops lets just leave...

Just speaking for myself I'd say this about that quote. "It does not matter how beautiful your theory is, it does not matter how smart you are, if it doesn't agree with experiment it's wrong. " Obviously the guy who said this has absolutely no clue how to teach someone to cast a fly rod. ...

Climbing Loop

" A climbing loop is advantageous in distance casting. How to generate a climbing loop through the control of the casting stroke is left as a considerable exercise to the reader." "Lift from form drag is the key reason the 170 style of casting produces longer distances." " ...

Yeah sure 126 feet. But I dropped out of that game a few years back. The form required for xtreme distance casting ironically is somewhat limited to just that task. I work on seeing how far I can cast without looking behind me and on good days hit 110 with some translation added to the stroke. how ...

Use to be a time that was true Hal. Now the numbers are reversed and you can't be a proficient xtreme distance caster if you only devote 5% of your practice time to that aspect of the sport.

Well that would be quite a good cast for any caster with a 3wt, a hundred feet that is. The line class and rod in and of itself is not distance oriented anyway so the comparison to larger line and rod classes is a bit skewed. I imagine though you could configure a head and perhaps hit 100 with no a...
