Definitely plenty of saltfly opportunities around North Island - even catching snapper in the Auckland Harbour over the mudflat shallows. You can see my article in latest FlyLife magazine for some location and technique details. :)

My last two snapper in the session were 'keepers' - and the wife was so pleased to have some 'real' fish (ie, not trout)that she's happy for me to try and catch some more! :laugh:

Yes these guys are great fun & lighter is definitely the wat to go - used a 7 weight on the occasion, but will try next time with my 5/6. As water is so shallow and minimal current, I was using a floater with a 9ft leader with a 2/3 kg tippet. Got my first hit on a 1.0 clouser, but wasnt connec...

Snapper swoffing in shallow water - snapper on the fly

Warm water wading in upper Auckland Harbour a few days ago and hooked 6 of these little power packed snapper in an hour's session in waist deep water. Stripping trays are great landing nets!My Webpage

NZ only had a "grayling" species that was of any decent size prior to trout introduction in 1880s. They were officially declared extinct in the 1930s. This has been used by people with more greenie cells than brain cells to blame trout. However the grayling disappeared from river systems ...
