Paul,

I would think that a low mass rod would be an advantage for distance since a significant amount of energy from the caster's hand is going into accelerating and decelerating the rod instead of into the line. Doesn't help at all if it breaks though. Just thinking.

I used shrink tubing and antron yarn or closed cell foam to make droppers or float indicators back before there were any fancy kits for such. You can make a few of different sizes for different water conditions. See:

I use a 5' graphite 3 wt. overlined with the front half of a 6 wt WF. The rod is really stiff and with it overlined and a short leasder, you can zing tight little side arm loops up under the overhanging tags. You can also roll cast tight little loops with it. I am talking little bitty streams and s...

After 40 years of using both at the office, I find an electronic 6" digital caliper to be nearly as accurate and easier to use than a micrometer. If you want to do work below .001", which I suspect you do not unless you are a gunsmith or something, calipers are the ticket. You can get a s...

The very lightest 1-3 wt. reels will be slightly over 3 Oz. I suppose the most discerning angler can feel 3/4 oz. difference. But then, I am certainly not in that cattegory. And drag, palm, or otherwise, it would take skill and practice to consistantly land those big fish with such light tackle.

Hal In my younger drinking days, while I did aquire a taste for bourbon, I grew quite fond of Bunnahabhain 14yr. Used to pick up a couple of bottles of single malt each time I made the trip back. Much cheaper in duty free than off the shelf here - if you could even find anything except Glenfiddich....

Hal, Bourbon started life as moonshine but is now far from it. There are strict rules for the production of bourbon and Tennesee Whiskey (which also qualifies as bourbon except that it is usually carbon filtered). All bourbon is made from a large percentage of corn and is aged in new charred oak ba...

I was coming home from Norwich, England after a few weeks of business. I was tired and looking forward to a little shut eye on the long flight home. The first leg was a shuttle across the North Sea to Schiphol at Amsterdam to catch a KLM 747 back across the pond. That was uneventful but upon boardi...

As you all know, the relationship between line acceleration and rod butt angular rotation is quite complex. I am starting to think that over analyzing rod butt acceleration is a waste of time until we clean up the connection between it and line acceleration. I am going on vacation for a while. See ...

Gordy, The question then becomes this. Why did Paul start with a low acceleration and increase it to some maximum. He obviously could have gotten greater velocity if he had started with some maximum and held it. So is his curve established by his physical ability and the biomechanics associated wit...

Gordy, I think you understood what I was saying even if you didn't agree with the terms. BTW, I know what kinetic energy is, I know what potential energy is, I know what mechanical energy is, and a bunch more. But my physics instructor never filled me in on "work energy." He only explaine...

I have found that looking at graphs in displacement terms does more to my understanding than does using time. Although the beginning of a cast is very important, more energy is transferred towards the end. That part of the plot becomes needlessly compressed when looking at time as the ordinate rath...

Bernd, You can't "feel" acceleration because the body does not have a "feel acceleration" sense. The closest that it posseses is the inner ear which can sense "change in acceleration" in the cerebral cavity. You are being accelerated all the time and you can't sense it...

Paul, I don't think the analyzer was ever designed to "teach" flycasting. It is an excellent tool to analyze what the result of a cast is. From that, a good instructor can help. But I don't think an electronic instrument will ever be able to "teach." Here is my experience with i...

Bernd, I have struggled with this problem for years. I have seen all the models and heard all the theories. I even built a model which allows you to supply the input to a fly rod handle and see what the line does. In the end, I came to the following conclusion. I have spent years casting at night a...
