Hi Merlin, The 34 cms was with 7.1 ounces. I can add more but it will not bend to the required one third, I am not sure about the ferrule. This prototype has all the action above the ferrule. If there is no projective calculation, I'll wait until I have fully tested it on the field. The others I ca...

Hi Gents, It is not a linear but is there a way I can extrapolate ERN on a blank that will not ben to one third of the length. I thought I read somewhere that ERN can be calculated for spinning blanks which this particular fly blank more closely matches than conventional fly blanks. I'm reluctant t...

Agree Merlin, non linear equates to the the biomechanics of distance casting.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing

Received a remarkable email recently from a British Armed Forces Veteran who had started fly fishing 12 months ago after being accepted by the United Kingdom based Fishing for Heroes Program. He is moving to Australia with his family in mid April and had heard that we had started Project Healing Wa...

Thanks Torsten, Andy is spot on, the ICSF Event 2 has a max line weight of 38 grams. Steve put that blank together quite a few years back now to throw a 42 gram line (USA allowance) but many use the Loomis 42 to cast the 38 gram line today, reflects the trend to stiffer rods. Be interesting to comp...

Hi Merlin, Interesting question you pose about segments on the turnover arc. I did an exercise a while back to measure tip, mid rod and butt section speed to identify impact of different body rotation changes within the cast, each with the same wrist rotation. Will revisit that in respect of rod an...

Just read Grunde's post 246 and am trying to catch up with the background but I agree with Grunde's explanation of the soft stop for distance. I can only support Grunde's analysis from his modelling by adding that from a biomechanical viewpoint the optimum hand speed derived after body segment rota...

Hi Grunde, If I incorporate a step in my delivery cast, not a swoop, but a rotation and vertical lift of my elbow, is the distance used in your definition of force profile (like that term - very descriptive) the total distance the hand travels? In this case, the sum of the two linear distances comp...

Hi Grunde, My impression is that for a given cast good casters aim for the same speed profile for a wide range of rod actions. I share that view. Re the spring/lever impact, it is particularly noticeable when casting a plug or weight The limiting factors on the efficiency of the spring and lever se...

John, I think nearly all fly rods are designed empirically - shure there are some mathematical models existing, but they can explain in my opinion only certain aspects of the cast. Hard is for instance to model the human. So at the end a good test caster is required for a good design. And not all a...

Very interesting discussion Gents, enjoying the posts. Salient question Bernd. When I designed the CTS tournament rods back in 2002, the T40 was the first production rod. It was too stiff so I then went to a softer action, which became the T38. It was too soft so the T39 resulted and that is the mo...
