Campbell,
Blackwater is correct in his quote. But, in the main, most of the feathers from the bird can be used in some way.
For herl bodies I find the primary and secondary feathers are the best but in reality I have used others successfully.
BTW, try dying some with olive. Exraordinary.

Mind you he did originate it for use on still waters. The late Arthur Cove used this effect as a team of droppers fishing them (among other spider patterns) VVVVEEEERRRRRYYYYY slow on a retrieve and caught numerous fish with the pattern. I have an old friend in Australia that has fished nothing but...

Good observation Alex. It should be known as the 'Black & Peacock' in the tradition of old soft hackled flies that drew no name other the the materials. In this instance black hackle and peacock body. A forerunner was the 'Smoke Fly' and old North Country pattern which had a fine silver ribbing...

Lars There a couple of times a year when snails start moving (migrating if you like) in stillwaters. When this happens, the fish do lock onto them as they are an important part of their diet. They protrude their foot, to which a small bubble is attached. How they do this I do not know. This causes ...

Hi Eagles Nest, I have fished small dries most of the time this year. Size 18 has been big for me and I have landed some awfully large fish. I haven't experienced the same problem, but that could be of the type of hook that I use - Partridge SLD. It seems to penetrate well and holds on. Mind you I ...

Having been a guide for over 20 years, a competition caster in Australia and a registered casting Instructor, I have recently become a casting instructor using this style. While some of us may think that it is not a 'pure' casting technique is is however one that has been developed to fishing very ...
