Good response as always from Rudi when it comes to shooting heads and I pretty much agree with all that he says. I use SH's for most of my sunk line still water trout bank fishing because I find them so much more 'handy' than full lines. They are quick to aerialise and quick to get back out in the ...

Hello Rodger. I can't think why a shooting head would be deemed 'unsporting' because it is a perfectly legitimate way to cast a fly. If the fishery concerned has decided to ban their use for reasons known only to themselves that is another matter and their use in such circumstances shouldn't be con...

I think you're right Bernd, really heavy flies such as clousers and dog knobblers carry on under the momentum of their own weight rather than being towed by the leader and tippet at the conclusion of the cast.

Trev - many thanks for the info. The rod will be used mainly for still water trout fishing in the UK. Building the rod could be a project for the coming winter.

Spot on about the form and density of the 'fly'.

I'm sure everyone knows of the importance to match the size/weight/air resistance of the fly being cast to the thickness of the tippet, weight of fly line allied to a suitable fly rod.

"Let the rod do the work", or "Make the rod do the work" are just a couple of phrases we might use to try to convey something to a student. I have found that there is rarely one thing that says it all and teaching is a fairly lengthy process of getting to know your student, asse...

Even a £600.00 rod doesn't do much apart from look pretty. It just sort of lays there, looking like a carbon tube with guides attached and a handle. Seriously though, I've always preferred the expression - ' make the rod do the work' rather than; ' let the rod do the work'. The caster of course mak...

Thanks Jeroen - I'm considering a 9' #7 weight.

Trev - do you order the blanks direct from the makers in NZ or through a dealership somewhere please?

Cheers
Pete.

Like you said Frank you do the best you can with what you have access to and what your students come to you to cast with although if what they have is totally unsuitable or mismatched you give them your stuff to use. I agree, it's pretty basic stuff! I have to admit to being impressed with some of ...

Hi Trev.

That's a very nice build you've done on that blank. Do you know where the blanks are made and have you any experience of others in the range, I'm particularly interested in a 9' #7 weight 4 piece rod?

Hi again Frank. Just one thing to add - if any individual is never going to need a #3 weight or a #12 weight outfit to fish with why should they invest hard earned money to buy one just so that they can show how good they are with it to anyone willing to watch and listen? I still maintain that a go...
