Well, thats always an issue. Being from South Texas, my airfare expense is very large. It cost me 850.00 for airfare to Salt Lake City. I would be willing to bet some of you guys could fly from overseas for less or equal. For me though, I don't have any other options. I don't have any competitions ...

Yep I practiced with the new rods they had this year, and your right it takes a good caster 5 or 6 casts to get a rod dialed in, so it doesn't teem to really matter which rod is used usually the best casters will figure them out quickly. The rods this year were not very good for carrying a long lin...

Paul, I did not see any distance gained from the sharkskin in practice, but the rods were different from last year as well. Steve uses a compact stroke because he carries a perfect 70 to 75 feet with damn near no slack, and shoots to about 85 to 90. No real need to have a long stroke on the backcas...

Rich, if you saw me in underwear you would realize how cruel that remark really is. I believe I am a shoe in for the new Under Armour robe.

Bart, Steve threw further in the competition than any of his practice casts, that I saw, anyhow. He was pretty damn consistent in the 116 to 119. He has the ability to shut out everything and just do what he does in practice, and sometime push it even further. He is amazing really, and one hell of ...

Well, I appreciate the hope Eric. I thought I was throwing as good as I ever have in practice, even off the platform. I am afraid I tangled some casts badly, and the long ones that I threw were out of bounds by roughly 3 to 5 inches and would have been long enough to at least get me to the final ro...

My favorite is the SA redfish line. The front taper is designed to turn over slightly larger flies, and the coating does not get soft in the 90 plus temps. The running line is a slightly larger diameter so it floats well when wading. It's not quite the slinky that some other companies salt lines ar...

Yeah, that was 2001. Nothing like a painted white XP as the fastest rod. Man that thing had a weird action with all of the non factory junk on it. I am not sure what the slower rod was, I think it was one of the first SLTs.

I didn't mean to open up a can of worms Bruce, sorry. Bart, Last year Bruce made a few lines with very long bellies, stiff coatings, and very small diameter running lines. Without getting more into the technical aspects of the line, lets just say they went a long way. These lines were apparently ex...

Hey Jay, In year 2000, the Rio longcast and the SA distance along with a few other lines by Orvis (long belly trout), and a long belly wulf line was available. Most of the better casters used the 90 foot SA distance taper which still had a pretty long head. Attaching those lines to a small diameter...

Waldo, Yes indeed, Rudy is a very impressive caster. If you see him anytime soon, please tell him I said hello. I guess thats what I am getting at really. The outdoor ISE shows, of which there is only one now, have the casting lanes set up in a certain direction regardless of wind direction. They h...

Hi Lasse,

I was looking at the names on that list, and recognized Rudy's name. Rudy has cast in quite a few Best of the West qualifiers. He is a great caster, and apparently a good photographer as well. I have enjoyed talking with him every time I have run into him.

They very well might be able to. I certainly don't believe for a second that the all of the top casters are from over here. It is important to use the same equipment and have it indoors with a 10 foot lane and similar backcast restraints if you want to make any sort of comparison. If not, compariso...

Hello Bruce, I don't think that many people realize that this is a hunting and fishing consumer show and not a casting contest, and booth space is at a premium, and a successful show is what allows this contest in the first place. That being said, think about this for next year in the high altitude...

Well, I was pretty good ball player and 200 meter man. All I can tell you was, the focus and try harder attitude worked quite well for those sports. My fastest times and best performances were always in competition. So far in casting, the focus and try harder approach seems to mean rush rotation on...
