Maybe it smacks too much of "eco-fundamentalist" thinking...... :???:

Well as some of you know I do not like seals!

But I fucking hate Dams even more, a little history...

The Saint John River in New Brunswick Canada, was at one time the best I mean the best Atlantic salmon river in the world... a number of things changed this, and dams were no small part of those factors....

Well I just finished reading a nice little book by Andy Russell, "The Life of a River", it is about the Oldman River and area...

Through his skillful writing you get a sense of the river before the Oldman Dam went in, and changed the face the area...

In the acknowledgments section of the book he lists a couple of documents for people who are interested in dams and what the real impact of a dam on a river are. I list them here in the hope that it will aid the fight against this DAMN Dam.. and destruction of one of NZ's wild rivers.

1. In 1984 a report to the European Ecological Action Group in Bordeaux, France, By Nicholas Hildyard and Edward Goldsmith was Published by the Wadebridge Ecological Centre, Worthyville Manor, Camelford, Cornwall, PL32 9TT, UK. The First two volumes, totaling 677 pages , consist of a comprehensive collection of studies of the larges dams of the world. The third will be available in Aug 1987. This clearly written and revealing document covers all the major dams of the world and deals with every aspect of them. It is absolutely required reading for anyone interested in dams, especially those who have been told how many advantages will be forthcoming from their construction for power and irrigation.

(It is older but I don't think the facts change)

2. Another book, "To the Last Drop", by Michael Keating, published by Macmillan of Canada, is highly recommended.

I hope that these resources aid in the fight against the destruction of the river(s) in New Zealand and any were in the world....
As in the army I have never had a bad day fly fishing, some damn uncomfortable ones but never a bad one.

I havent heard much about it recently.. attention has moved onto the Clutha... This could be in a section below existing the dams.

From a conservation point of view I would suggest it has less impact on the environment, it would flood farm land rather than an unspoilt wilderness. But it is likely to affect far more people.
Lets hope that the attention it is now receiving doesnt detract from the Nevis cause.

Please sign up if you care!
