Ed Ward's DVD Don't leave the Box - Skajit casting and unloading the rod

Post by slack »

As I understand it, if you leave his imaginary box, you will not keep the rod loaded,Is this more or less his style or is this a casting principle? I know Skajit casting has different concepts than traditional Spey casting. I guess my real question is how important is that Box? Thanks in advance ,I always get great answers on this site. slack

Hmmm. I always have a problem when someone talks about rod loading. Rod loading is 15-20%. The rest is leverage.

I actually don't know what the box is however. But I suspect it's more about anchor than loading. And that it's probably all wrong :p

Cheers, Paul

Paul thanks for your reply. The box ,as I take it, is a imaginary rectangle ,that is placed directly over your chest to keep your casting stroke very compressed and short .When making the sweep and cast, both hands do not leave this box or you will unload the rod, if I understand it correctly. Maybe some one owns the DVD or saw it and can expand on why the rod unloads. The No 180 principle and continuous motion made sense, but I question why the rod would unload if you leave the box. Again thanks slack

it's a style and nothing more.
any open-minded caster could 'go out of the box' and not loose line tension.

on another note, although it works for him and his groupies and i guess that's cool, this hyper-rigid method can't help but remind me of the days when casting was taught with a book under the arm. so much for progress or keeping up with contemporary casting...

cheers,
marc
