7D or 650D

Post by TheBadger »

Once exams are over I'm going to be picking up a new camera, the only question is...what camera?

I know what lens I want to get (Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM). I've also just noticed that this comes as a kit with the 7D...which brings the price of the two cameras with that lens much much closer together. Anyone have any suggestions as to which to go for? Logic states the 7D will be a much better camera, but it's also 3 years older than the 650 so I'm just looking for some confirmation one way or the other.

In my opinion a no-brainer. The 7D is a metal workhorse, where the 650D is a plastic toy. Having said that, I use a 400D as backup for quite a few years now without too many problems.
Here's the comparison. If it was up to me, the weather resistance, focal points and camera speed are pretty important. The 7D is quite a bit heavier than the 650D. Heavy in my book translates to sturdy. But you may find it a nuisance if you are travelling light.

I would go for the 7D because it's weather sealed, metal body, and it's a a tough piece of equipment. It really proved itself as a great camera over the years, too.

Thanks guys. At the end of the day price is going to be a substantial consideration, but I do have a little wiggle room.

So there's no reason not to buy a slightly older camera?

Fingers crossed I can find the 7d at a good price.

jack, look at the specs.
It's all there. Wildlife- photographers especially like the 7D and with a reason.
While there's no 7D substitute in the Canon line-up, it's still "the one" in that segment.
take a look at this: :p

Thanks Skeg. Durability's a pretty big consideration for a fishing camera.

I realised from the start that this was a slightly annoying thread - like comparing apples and oranges - but the responses have been really useful for convincing me to spend lots of money hahaha!

I think that the mechanics of a camera are often overlooked nowadays. While in the days of the analog and even before autofocus, the durability of the hardware was a number one selling point. From that point of view the 7D is a serious piece of kit. It is no certainty that if the 8D is released, the quality of the housing and mechanics will be the same. Flashy software and electronics are worth shit when a camera quits on you when the going gets tough.

It's quite interesting... One forum has unanimously told me to buy the 7d, another has told me to buy a cheap body and the 17-55mm lens.

So how big of a difference is there between the 17-55mm and the 15-85?

Thanks again for fielding all of my questions!

Not sure if trading a camera body that might die on you when you are in the bush, for a better lens is such a great idea. The 17-55 is a great lens though. Although I am not too keen on the feel of it: a bit cheap and 'plasticky'.
The 2.8 aperture over the entire range will give you sharper images and continuous quality over the entire focal range. The 2.8 will also deliver some good bokeh (the unsharp background). Something a lens like the 15-85 will not be able to provide. Having said that the 15-85 might be a perfect lens for everyday photography.

Sigma makes a similar range zoom
that gets some good reviews.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advice Jeroen. I really appreciate it. I think it might have to be the 7d and the 15-85.
