Where have all - The beginners gone?

Post by victor »

When I first joined the board, in 2004, I am sure the beginners section was always full of stupid ( :D ) questions, most of them mine and Eric's I admit.

Don't people start at the beginning any more?

Not being condesending, but, mostly questions answered here are given in a much less technical way than is normal in the flycasting section, and much less prone to go off into tech speak. In other words, easier for me to understand.

So, gimme a break and ask some stupid questions.

Mike (non tech)
it's casting Jim, but not as we know it, according to EFFA

I'm a beginner.......I'm going to try and catch a fish I've been throwing at all season.
I'm casting upstream on the left bank, bushes to the side and rear so the cast has to be off the left shoulder. There is a large bed of weed which means I have to make a big left side ariel mend and I have to put the fly in a tight gap between an overhanging branch and a dog rose bush tight on the bank.
I always hook right, hit the dog rose and lose my bloody fly...can you help ??

To answer your question Mike, I know a few beginners Ive directed towards this site become overwhelmed when even the most simple of questions are taken over and become 16 page technical discussions.

As instructors I feel we need to focus on the question at hand on the thread, remembering the askers level of understanding, and keep with it. Any advanced discussion should be taken to a different thread.

Anyway...

Oops, I have just checked through from the beginning (28 pages) and discovered that it was Eric asking all the stupid questions, this is the first time I have posted a question in the beginners section :p

My only excuse is that I had been flyfishing for 30 years before I discovered Sexyloops and I must have felt as if I was automatically an intermediate. How wrong can you be?

It was a cunning plan to have Eric moderating the beginner's section. We should probably move Eric over to the fishing or casting section (now that he's a CI and not a beginner) and find a new beginner/s to moderate this forum!
It's an exploration; bring flyrods.

Finding a beginner here is like finding a virgin at a porno convention. You're all a bunch a casting perverts! :D

Mike, Not every question was stupid :D besides it looked like you needed something to answer.

OK, here's a question...
Are people's dominant eyes generally the same as their handedness? (right handed : right eyed)

Casting w/ my non-dominant hand, I have a natural tendency to pull my backcast inside and the tag ends up clipping the rod or whizzing by my head. I know how to fix it (check my rod path and tip drift) but I don't remember it being this bad when learning the first time. Anyone else experienced this? I know this is sometimes because of pulling the rod to my dominant eye side as this shows up more when trying accuracy.
...the fish know this and are evil... ~marc

hey Eric !

nope, the two aren't connected.
this was the first thing we'd check out with beginner archers.

test-
with both eyes open point your finger at a precise object.

close your left eye. if the finger didn't 'jump off' the target then you're right eyed.
if it jumps when you close the right eye, you're left eyed.

cheers,
marc
