Bourbon - good stuff to try

Post by Biology »

Evening - I've long been a fan of Irish whiskey and the Islay malts. I've never tried a good bourbon. Any recommendations? And how should it be taken?

Cheers,
Andy

Tried Jim Beam Red stag black cherry few weeks ago. Special taste. Drinkable dry, on the rocks, as well with coke. I need to buy another bottle ASAP.

Cheers,
Janko

I'm taking the family to Colorado and Wyoming in the summer (we live in London) and I have a vision of sitting by a river, under the stars, by a fire, drinking bourbon from an old enamelled tin cup. Idealistic and romantic maybe but I'm looking forward to it! I'm not even sure if I like bourbon, but love scotch and it just seems the right thing to do.

If you're heading for Colorado, you must, must, I say visit Steamboat Springs, Colorado. It is a snap shot of the old West with the Yampa River running right through the town.

Pull it up on Google. Sipping Bourbon at one of the restaurants along the river with a good old fashioned 1 1/2 inch TBone Steak will get it done. You and your family will love the town. (Also one of the best Ski resorts in the USA.)

BTW...don't know what came over me that I wouldn't mention that there's great fly fising in and around Steamboat Springs. Check it out.

Andy, if you prefer Irish whiskey to Scotch whisky then you will probably be able to drink Bourbon just fine... Yes, go for Makers Mark, you can drink that stuff straight, no problem.

Neil,
Thanks, but the closest we will get to Steamboat will be fishing the Blue and the Colorado . Unfortunately the trip is now all mapped out (needless to say Daddy has of course considered fishing opportunities at every stop) and Steamboat is off the route.

Does anyone know if there is there a Bourbon from either Colorado or Wyoming? And before I start getting too idealistic, can you buy whiskey in a supermarket in Co. or do you have to go to a specialist liquor store?

Bourbon can only come from Kentucky ;)

Yes, you pretty much need to find a liquor store in all the mountain west states (CO, Wyo, Montana, Idaho).

There are a few distilleries in CO. No idea which is best.

I was coming home from Norwich, England after a few weeks of business. I was tired and looking forward to a little shut eye on the long flight home. The first leg was a shuttle across the North Sea to Schiphol at Amsterdam to catch a KLM 747 back across the pond. That was uneventful but upon boarding the plane back to the States, I was seated next to the window in business class and a gentleman was seated on the isle next to me. We chatted a bit and I found out he was from York. One subject led to another and pretty soon we came around to talking about Scotch. Being a single malt maven, as was he, we walked the whisky trail for an hour or so discussing all the pros and cons of each area. When the stewardess came around for drink orders, my new friend says, “Say, I hear you gents in the US have a whiskey called bourbon that everybody tends to like.”
“Careful,” says I. “It is definitely an acquired taste.”
“I’m gonna try it,” says he. “Stewardess, can I have some bourbon?”
“We have Jack Daniels, sir.”
Now Jack Daniels does not call their product “straight bourbon whiskey.” For whatever reason, they call it Tennessee whisky, but from a practical standpoint, it is bourbon because it meets all the qualifications thereof. For use bourbon lovers, it is a good whiskey especially in the “Gentleman Jack” variety. But for those not acquainted to its character, it is a close cousin of turpentine.
“I’ll have two,” where upon he was presented two of a mysterious brown liquid in a black labeled small square bottle with a clear plastic tumbler. He poured one of the bottles into the tumbler and proceeded to knock it back.
What happened next is really beyond description but I’ll give it a try. I may embellish it a bit for effect.
He froze dead still, his face turned red, fire shot out of his ears, and smoke poured out of his nose. He leaned over and spat the whole mess into the aisle and started wiping his tongue with a napkin screaming, “How the hell can you people drink that stuff.”
“I told you it was an acquired taste,” says I. I did get a lot of shut eye on the way back.

Woah.... thanks for the cautionary tale Bob. I'll proceed with caution.
