Post by Paul Arden »

I know there are a few 'shroomists on board, so: instant death, hallucinogenic or a tasty meal?

The only mushrooms I've picked myself were found amongst cattle dung in Australia. They were pretty good actually

So I can eat the puffballs or turn them into ink? :???:

Ciao
The second picture (wth the flat head),
In Polish name KANIA
In Italian name CAPELONE
100% sure
Make sure it has a ring on the leg.
Fucking tasty stuff, use only the head.
Eggwash, then bread crumbs, and fried on the pan with oil, looks like veal shnitzel, and taste awsome.
Had 5 two days ago.
No bulshit,
All the other puffy stuff -ignore it.
P.s
In Poland we pick mushrooms every year in this period. The safest are with the sponge under the head, no blades, but Im sure aboit the one I wrote.
If you find some more, post the photos, I'll help
cheers

Thanks Mike!! Will eat them tomorrow. If you don't hear from me soon it's because I'm dead or tripping.

Cheers, Paul

paul, the first is good if it's not brownish in the inside...then it's great.
the second called "Roes leg" - "őzláb" in Hungarian, but the "gyilkos galóca" is very similar - it's quite a poisonous 'shroom.
it's the "death cap":

...look at the leg, if there's a "shoe" - do not eat it.

this is NOT good:

What does a mushroom shoe look like? :???:

I like the fact that one is tasty and the other which is very similar kills you. It's a bit like women really :p

No worries mate,
I wouldnt give bad advice to put you down, you have my rod to finish :p
You see, on the picture from Skeg there is a box of polish matches (we know what we talking about).
Again dont trust blades, look around for sponge ones
cheers

Puff balls in the woods / undergrowth which sound and n look hollow , tend to be smallish and expel a puff of pores when bashed (hence the name) are yucky. Puff balls in the fields (invariably in meadow type grassland) are solid and fantastic to eat. Meaty in texture, soak up other flavours and can be sliced and fried, hollowed out and baked with cream, beacon etc. Yummy. Also can be very big - size of a football, or bigger.
That approach, simplistic though it is has worked for me and I'm not dead yet.

I wouldn't fuck about eating fungi based on mediocre photos on the net. Mike's advice to only eat shrooms with sponge on the underside ( boletus family) is more or less true, i.e. you won't die if you eat a wrong one but you could be pretty ill if you ate a boletus satanas. There are lots of tasty stuff out there for you to gather but try to find a local expert before stuffing hastily identified shrooms down your throat. After all they are not really nourishing, around 90% water, it's just the taste that is nice. Fungi are fun but you need to know what you are doing before eating them.
