winged ants

Post by Paul Arden »

Are about in Hungary. I know that my cabin is full of the bastards!

In fact I'm covered in them.

Flying ant day is usually about now in London but I haven't seen any so far, all the rain might have delayed it a bit.

Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.

Usually a wee bit later up here - and it usually coincides with some dry, warm weather. ( I wish!)

Every time it happens I've been nowhere near a fishing opportunity.

Have you blokes fished through a winged ant hatch/fall?

Yes many times. Used to get on average 3 falls/year at Ardleigh. So at a guess I've fished at least thirty of them. Every fish on the lake is up. Including some nice roach :p. Awesome dry fly fishing. You can pick the bigger fish or even practise fishing really small flies for the hell of it. They won't look at flies bigger than ants but they'll take flies smaller. They'll also take small black wets subsurface but it's less effective (on stillwaters anyway) and less fun. Ant falls were the highlight of my year!

Cheers, Paul

Incidentally I've never experienced two ant falls back to back on successive evenings. I'm sure it happens but it never happened when I was fishing Ardleigh.
