boot repair - sticking back the felt

Post by James9118 »

Hi,

What's the best product for re-attaching the felt to the bottom of my wading boots?

Cheers, James.

The best results I've had is to take it to a cobblers. They do a better job than Simms. I've used polyurethane glue which works but its hard to clamp the sole to the boot properly for long enough.

Aquasure mate.

Clean & Dry everything and use about 2/3 tube on each sole, smear over both surfaces leave for about 45 mins then bind the whole boot in gaffa tape for 24 hours as tightly as you can get. Sole will never come off again.

Cheers

Keep it simple: take it to a cobbler and tell him you will stand in the water with it, so he should be generous with the glue. In Hungary it costs probably 2-4 euros to glue the felt sole back and they will wear down before they come off again.

James, I've tried on a few occasions myself and failed spectacularly :-).

Since then, I always took my boots to a cobbler's. It never cost me more than 10 quid plus the soles, so if prices are similar in the UK, you can easily spend the same amount in glue before you're done.

Now I use boots with Vibram-soles - they are more durable, I stand as good as I do on felt (and even better on grass etc) and they don't carry Gyro and other masty stuff from river to river as easy. But that's another discussion :-)

I got a pair of simms boots with vibram soles this year and they are useless on rocky rivers. :glare:

Felt and studs will be used next year before I end up in for a swim.

Put these on Ryan, you could climb a wall with them.

Vibram on it's own is rubbish.

I use mine all the time, on river, in the sea and on rocks both places and I find them great...

I found that felt also got very slippery after 5-6 outings when it got walked "flat" so to speak. After a while I think felt is so compressed that it's useless.

You got any studs in them Lars?

I put Vibram on an older pair of Guide boots & flopped all over the place in Canadian & Scottish rivers until I finally put studs in. That was on mixed river bottoms - shiny cobbles and mossy boulders.

Got the New Guide boots with "Sticky" Vibram & was a little better. Then put the cleats in and they're great.

My old G3's have the original felt and studs & work really well on Mossy boulders. Crap on just about everything else.

I have them on. They are still shit when wading on rocks Al.

Felt and studs are best on rocky rivers from my experience.

Fair enough, I remember while back there was a company did a mix of felt & rubber cleats. Thought that was a good idea. Also wire through the rubber, had them & they worked pretty well.
