I know next to nothing about competition casting. However on looking at the rules in BFCC I can't understand the reasoning behind the maximum rod length rule for single hand competitions. Anyone care to give some background?
It appears that the preferred length by most would be within the rules anyway - so why restrict?

Hi Malcolm,
IMHO there are three primary reasons for the 3 m rod length restriction, namely;
1. difficulty in controlling a longer rod during the casting action to generate the required line speed to cast 70 plus metres.
2. getting the optimum mix of butt diameter, tip diameter, taper and wall thickness to provide optimal weight/stiffness ratio for a longer rod.
3. cost of longer rods.
I know some casters who may cast further with longer rods but in general, I believe the restrictions assist most competitors and the sport.
