The Perfect fishing vehicle?

Post by The 'GENT' »

What would you think is the perfect fly fishing vehicle?

Maybe you would sleep in it?

Keep the rods set up in it?

Go off-road if needed?

Must be under 20k?

I think a VW trasporter van would be hard to beat?

This has been an ongoing debate with my friends for some time. Being in the Highlands good 4WD would help a lot. Many of these are available, but they tend to be big thirsty monsters. There are smaller ones available, but they suffer the other problem. Low ground clearance. What we would like is a small 4WD with adjustable hydraulic suspension, so that you could raise it up when going off road.

That not being available my current feeling is to get an estate car. Plenty of room to keep your rods assembled if needed, and space to sleep in when the fishing is quiet. Then tow a trailer with an Argo-cat on it. Many of the lochs we fish are not even accessible by a Land Rover. An Argo-cat really will go anywhere.

You may remember the TV series Floyd on Spain, with the late Keith Floyd. At the end he did a piece to camera about the making of the series. He said,
"In the making of this series we have used all kinds of vehicle, from bicycles to trucks, cars, busses, helicopters. And I can now say that the only kind of vehicle that can go anywhere is...

...A hire car."

Cheers,
C.

I'm looking at the Delica 4x4 for Europe. Maybe too small, I don't know. But kitted out as a camper I think it would be perfect. A solid 4x4 van.
It's an exploration; bring flyrods.

Hi Paul.

It's why I thought the VW would be good. I could kit it out like a van and save about 10k. Will have a look at the one you suggested?

Would value your input re the trout weight for length post I've just put up?

The reason I like it is because it's built on a 4x4 chassis and I'm a bit of a car killer. Will have a look at the trout length post!

Cheers, Paul

My 2 cents .....

Depends on the continent. Had a VW camper (Bulli) (1982 Belg built) which did it all for me - slept 4, 2 up 2 down, cooker, fridge and sink, table for tying flies and a decent stereo system and loads of room for kit and extras. Top speed was about 95 kms - but heck I was not in a rush to get anywhere fast - and it never once let me down in 5 years. Cost Euro 750,- plus some welding.

Saw and fished in Germany, Holland, UK, Belgium, France, Croatia, Czech, Austria.

Plenty of them still around and resonable prices and easy engines !
70 % of the world is covered in water - GO FISH!

That's what fish are there for!

Personally, I'd opt for a VW Syncro van conversion. Ground clearance is sufficient and it's better to drive than the Mitsubishi which is just plain scary on wet roads.

Those VWs don't cost the earth to run but can be a wee bit pricey even on the 'very' second hand market :glare:
