Post by Bernd »

Hi everyone,
I'll give it a shot soon. Anyone here with some serious experience in that area?

Bernd,

http://www.stripersonline.com/f/161/fly-fishing-forum

is a site dedicated to striper fishing that has attracted surf fly fishermen from Cape Cod in Mass south to the Chesapeake Bay. It is a seasonal fishery, and varies from year to year, but those guys keep up on it. Some fish from boats as well and know of flats to fish for them too. Many fish at night as well.

Cheers,
Jim

I havent fished NY but live in NJ , if youre coming to NJ let me know and Ill try to help you out. The eastern points of Long Island are legendary areas to fish for stripers ,if youre heading there good luck to you .Id probably get a charter to show me the ropes there. Right now were in the middle of the summer doldrums , dont know how theyre doing out in LI .
If its moving, if you see a swirl, break, bait pop, a slick, cast ! We only get so many chances no matter what we do.Take them when you can.

Hey guys,
many thanks for respond!
Me and my friend Christine will fly to JFK (NY). Then we will fish around Mountauk for some days. After that we will go north to Martha's vineyard + Cape Cod. 13 days later we will leave from Boston.
So we have 13 days inbetween Montauk and Boston. Montauk is fixed but we are open for the rest.
We will have a guide in Montauk to go by boat for two days.
The other days we will fish on our own maybe a nother day guided via boat in the northern area...!?
Thanks Jim, will check!

Bernd, If youre in the area, let me know . I live in central jersey , near the coast , not far from the fishing grounds. This year the weather has been so warm that the ocean is warmer than I have ever remembered it so Im not sure when the fall bass runwill start.

Ps , If youre up in the Cape Cod area, Id also look into fishing Rhode Island , from what I hear theres pretty good land based fishing there. Ive been out in Montauk fishing from a boat. This was in the mid 90s. From what I remember the boat will give you a fairly good idea where you can catch fish form the surf.

Also , although I havent fished it much in the last few years, I went to Cape Cod twice a year to fish for close to ten years and can give you some insite if you want .Let me know.

I'm in downtown Jersey City.
directly across the river from lower Manhattan (World Trade Center).

For Stripers, I fish on Sandy Hook (NJ).

If you need more Montauk guide info drop me a line.
Andrew Derr is a guide and great guy out there : http://fishandflyonly.com/HOME/Andrew_Derr.html

There's Paul Dixon as well as Steve Bechard of Rise rods : http://risefishing.com/index.php/pro-staff-details?id=19

I just got back from there.

It wasn't a serious fishing trip for me. Where I was there were bluefish and smaller striped bass (up to 4kg or so). There were certainly a lot of them and I had lots of fun.

Reports from Montauk were that a few bigger fish were around, along with some false albacore and bonito. By October it should be really good!
