Skajit short and poly tips - tippit length

Post by slack »

Is their a general rule for tippet length when using a Skajit short head and poly leader on a Switch Rod. And since you need several tips, whats the best bang for your buck, with all the options.

3 to 3 1/2 times he length of the rod. I often loop on 10 or 14' salmon polyleaders on the clutha. A bit more heavy duty and durable than he trout weight. I also use the a i r f l o custom cut tips, 200gr which is essentially 20' of t-10, looped at both ends so you can cut to measure. I also use lengths of t 14 at times.

Chris, 3 to 3.5 rod length for tippet or the whole thing??

Slack,
If you're talking length of mono from fly to line... swinging fast sink tips, I typically have 3-4 feet of 15LB. Drifting or swinging floating line with very heavy fly, 6-7 feet of 6LB.

Thanks for your response . IF I have a 11' Switch rod and 3-3/12 times the length is 33 to 39'. If my head Skajit short is 20' 375 grain and my poly tip is 10',then to my poly tip I can add 3 to 9' of tippet ,leader, mono or what ever you want to call it and then tie on my fly is that correct ? again thanks

Sure, seems like a fine place to start. No rules in FF, maybe just guidelines :) Give it a cast and see what feels and fishes best
