Hi everyone,
Sea trout do not spawn every season. Some years they stay in the ocean and keep feeding instead of entering their river for spawning.
How about Brown trout?
Are there any scientific studies available?
Should be visible on their scales?
Any information about other trout species?

I think most do however...as you will know there are various sub-groupings of brown trout and one major division is between the long lived and short lived trout.
Let me explain: most brown trout are dead at around 7/8 years. On the other hand the long lived trout - and both sea run and totally freshwater trout can be short or long lived. The most well known example of the long lived trout is the "ferox" which has been extensively studied in Scotland and Ireland and also in Norway. The great lake trout of Europe - formerly known as "Salmo Trutta Lacustris" is almost certainly from the same grouping. These trout live to over 20 years old and don't start growing big normally until they switch to a fish diet at around 6-9 years old.
These huge trout (they have been caught to over 30lb in Scotland and Norway in recent years and Italian and German trout have been caught in the early part of this century to even greater sizes) and are strongly suspected of being bi-annual spawners (source "Ferox Trout and Arctic Char" by Dr Ron Greer).
The reason for this being that Dr Ron Greer has trapped so many of these trout in perfect condition at a time when they should be recovering from spawning.
