"Using a steeple cast and minimal backcasts I delivered my dry and dropper well upstream of the fish and watched as it swung left to intercept the nymph. I hooked it and took a step forward to get myself into a better position. At this point one of the strangest experiences of my fishing life took place. The entire bank and branch structure collapsed under my weight, taking me with it and delivering a very solid hit to the back of my head. Out of sheer desperation I grabbed out for the one stable branch and somehow found myself clinging one handed like a sloth upside down above a rather deep part of the river with my fly rod in the other hand and a very stroppy brown heading downstream. Quite how my rod didn’t break I will never understand. There was nothing for it but to sacrifice the dryness of my underwear and unceremoniously flop into the waist deep water. After the excitement of the strike the remainder of the fight was dour and another very thick brown eventually found its world bordered by green mesh."

Lovely shots Jeroen, what outfit you using there? Need to find a new reel for a 4wt XP and was considering Bauer.

I love the Bauer. Use it a lot on fresh and saltwater. It is a JM1.
Rod is a Bloke XL50 4wt (lovely rod, also for fresh and salt). Line is a Barrio wf4 (GT140, great line)

any prizes for ugly backgrounds? the pike are moving into the small industrial estate harbours we have in many towns and villages over here. As the roach gather in the somewhat warmer water in the harbours, the pike follow.
I got this one as I was trying out a rod for a review: a Mystic Reaper 9' #6, a very beefy six weight. Line was a RIO Outbound Hover.

@Jeroen How do you fish for the roach? I quite like them and haven't caught one for a very long time. Steve.

I use a light setup (#0 to 3/4). Leader/tippet lenght is 1.5 times the depth of the water I am fishing (below the indicator). I want to fish as close to the bottom as possible. Flies are small(ish) beadhead nymphs or scuds (size 14 to 18). I often fish a heavy scud on the bottom and a small nymph in fluorescent colours on the dropper (around 4" above the bottom fly).
For venues I choose parts of the water where the water temperature is slightly warmer than elsewhere, f.e. marinas and closed parts of a canal system. The roach will congregate in these parts in winter. Allow plenty of time for the nymphs to sink. Then strip in a very slow figure-eight movement. Rest the fly after every couple of strips.
Especially in winter the bites can be very subtle. I always need some fishing time to get used to reacting on bites. It is a great way to hone your skills for river nymphing.

Cheers,
Jeroen
