Felt - el cheapo

Hi Guys,
just wondering if anyone knows where I can find cheap felt. I don't fancy replacing my soles with the expensive tackleshop variety if I can source it cheaper.

I've tried carpet felt - doubled - and still too thin and Dave has some boot inserts which are still too thin.

Anyone know where I can buy a square yard for a couple of bucks?

Did you check to see if town has a big fabric shop? A mill end house? Mine has heavy felt (with a sweet electric saw/cutter) as well as latex... err gortex I mean.

There's a fabric shop around the corner from me with a sign out front saying, "get felt here".

Hi Paul.
May I suggest you could try a Saddler's shop or a Horse equipment type shop.
They normally carry thickness of up to 1/2inch, 12mm.

That stateside Mayatex place I suggested is for saddle blanket felt. Thick synthetic stuff. Maybe even get some offcuts or factory seconds.

Hi Bob.
I was told, some years ago, that real felt was better at the anti slip thing than the syn, material, rightly or wrongly?

Hence the reason why I suggested what I did and the thought that Paul could have been still in New Zealand Which could or maybe be easier to obtain than importing from the United States.

Actually Paul, you might just get one of these cheap sole kits somewhere. Cut several pieces out of one, since you're just putting it in the middle of the boot sole.

Hi.
Another suggestion, that appears to perform, so far.

Is to use a Scotch Scrubing patch, its green and make of a fine inter woven plastic type of material.
Here in Australia, they, as they come in 2 per packet, are only $au2.00.

When refitting felt or these Scotch pads, you may find that a product called Shoe Goo, is the most suitable.

SG, is a trade boot makers product, that most small boot repair shops and some hardware stores carry.
Comes in a small tube about 100mm/4inches long.
This glue remains flexable at all times and temps.

Hi Barry,
I know the patch you mean. I tried carpet felt which is quite similar but I'm really looking for heavy duty stuff. The felt I fitted to the bottom of my tramping boots lasted three months of hard tramping. I attached them with Araldite Titon (which is a waterproof flexible cement) and screws.

I don't use wading boots because I think they're crap for the sort of miles I put in. Instead I use modified quality tramping boots.

Im not in NZ anymore - it's winter :p
Canada now, driving through Quebec, heading into the US in the next day or two. Teaching in Arkansas next week then I'll spend most of the summer fishing Montana (probably).
