Trevlett; The fish in New Zealand had better watch out. Those flies will do a lot of damage. Which Island will you be fishing? Hope you have a good happy trip. Jax

Cracking flies, Trev! Amazing what one can do when there's no palinka involved...

I'd probably throw in a few small pheasant tails too, just for the hell of it - 16s and 18s. Not very fancy but the NZ fish love them. And some of these, too - easily my most successful fly last year, especially in the small sizes.

When are you off again?

I only have two months experience of NZ fishing - fishing the south island - but to me, the flies look great. I'm tying Wulfs and green Blowflys myself right now, will be going down to NZ in a few months and can't wait. I also tie a lot of cdc n elk/deer hair sedges, some with a lighter wing than yours, so they are easilier spottet on the water. I think the big ones are great indicator flies and also an ok imitation of a cicada.
Most of my beaded nymps are with black paintet beads. I think that sometimes the gold beads look too flashy in the very bright water. I would reccomend bringing a black marker pen, so you are able to tone down the gold beads - just in case.
As I wrote my experience is limited, so take it for what its worth.
Hope you'll have a great trip.
Cheers

My two cents worth ...

tie up some nymphs or emergers in black ie the CDC emergers but all black and some small # 18 black midges and nymphs.

You can always fish them off a bigger dry too
70 % of the world is covered in water - GO FISH!

That's what fish are there for!

It's a great fly. I remember when Dennis Black first showed it to me back in 1990... a Ken Shimizaki invention as I recall.

I absolutely love this fly, although I thought it was designed by Hans Weilenmann

Great fly regardless.

I believe there's two different styles...

that one might be closer to Hans pattern... Ken's one had the CDC palmered.
