Sandy River, OR - High Flows - A well done short film.
After seven + inches of rain melting the snowpack on Mt. Hood this past weekend, this is what one of our local steelhead rivers looked like.
A pretty well produced short film…

We use a lot of T-14 to get our flies deep when it's like that.

Ha. The steelhead will be there if humans don't kill them all first.
That flood was barely higher than a channel forming flow on the Sandy.
Steelhead are evolved to deal with that sort of thing.
Within 5 years of the eruption of Mt St Helens in 1980, wild steelhead were spawning in the Toutle River, WA, which had experienced devastating mud and ash flows following the eruption.

They are amazing creatures.

They find pockets of soft water and hang out in areas where flow, turbidity, and suspended sand are minimum. That means sometimes hanging out in the flooded trees.
It also weeds out the weak. Steep brawling rivers like the Sandy often have a reputation for having super strong wild steelhead.
