first asp 011

Post by skeg »

Here're a few overprocessed shots from the weekend with my bro' on the river Drava...asps already finished spawning...

he used a CTS 12' 4/5, Rio AFS 5/6, me a TnT 1206, Rio AFS 5/6...it was a beautiful afternoon. We both caught a few asps in the 2-3,5 kg range. They were quite skinny and weak for their size.

That release shot is fantastic.

This has got me really curious about Asp. I take it you're fishing in Hungary? I'm 1/4 Hungarian and still have a lot of family in Hungary, so if I make another trip over it looks like I'll have to pack the fly rod. They look like very cool fish. Do they primarily hit streamers down and across?

Zorro, you know...

Jack, yes, we fish for asp in Hu.
Asp is a COOL fish for sure, whatever it means. pack yer rod, and give me a ring when you're coming.

down and across-swinging is my fav method, but they take flies in fast retrieve, or surface flies as gurglers, poppers, too.

Cool. Are they total predators, or omnivores like chub?
Sport fishing with live kittens?
Too disgusting to be true?
You be the judge!

total pred. juveniles could eat whatever comes by, adults are fish (and occasional mouse/frog/insect) - eaters

They grow to a metre Andy. An eighty centimetre one in our rivers, is considered a pig..
