Awesome. Are there salmonids / trout present anywhere this amazing hatch occurs?
Sport fishing with live kittens?
Too disgusting to be true?
You be the judge!

That looks great!
Peter what is that flying fish thing?
Didn't know there were fresh water versions...

Do they take flies on the wing?
..or is that just an escape strategy.
You can observe a lot just by watching.

Awesome thread. Fantastic shots of both flies and fish - looks like great fun! What's the duration of the hatch? How long do I have to travel and come fish? :D

scotty and all,

these are screenshots from movie clips, what we are preparing to stitch together...

the hatch starts at the lower stretches of the river- and where the water temperature reaches a certain level, it continues to build up upstream...so as the Tisza and it's water-system is quite big, the hatch can be as long as two-to four weeks in different densities...the fishing is the best, when it starts, and at the end.
So one can follow the hatch for a week or more if travels upstream...
it's really quite an experience, because these creatures are BIG and beautiful.

Awesome, I'd love to see that. I think they call the hatch "The Blossoming, or "The Blooming".

Here's a David Attenborough film of them.

Great photos (I especially like the top view of that mayfly/kérész), Péter. Those asps are super cool fish and not that easy to catch&land them. I've got to say, despite being a Hun, I never saw a "Tiszavirágzás" (only on video).
BTW, I like taking photos of them, here you'll find some:
