A short film on one of RIO's new 2012 spey lines

Post by Simon Gawesworth »

Hi all

I just thought I would share this link with everyone. I know there has been a bit of talk and many questions about the new Scandi Short VersiTip Shooting head we have just launched, so I thought this little movie might help.

Hi Simon,

Lookin at the vid made me think. A friend came into the posession of a Sage GFL 8113-3 in very good condition.
What weight setup would you reccomend for that, taking into account minimal double hand experience.

Cheers

Nice clip. Off the subject, but have you changed the loops on the Rio Gold Simon? The one I got recently had a much smaller loop than the older line, much less wake on the water.

Taper felt a bit different too, or is it my imagination?

What's the difference between this head and the Steelhead Scandi (with poly-leaders) I just bought?

Nice line - I paticularly like that it can be used for single handed rods. I can think of many ways to put that to good use!

Why not just make the line w/ an attached running line and do away w/ one connection?

Well, that depends on what side of the continental divide you're on.

Ooops, sorry folks about the delay in replying. I was out fishing on a couple of trips. Anyway, here's some answers for you:

rrw35 - We did make a running change to all trout lines with a slimmer loop, but there has been no taper change at all.

grunde - this head is shorter than the steelhead scandi with versi/poly leaders. If you took the shortest steelhead scandi head at 31 ft and added the 10 ft VL, you would have 41 ft, which is quite long in really tight situations, or on shorter switch type rods. With this new head, the total length is 33 ft. There is no reason to put on a sinking leader as it is supplied with 10 ft tips.

mpukas - initially we introduced it as a head because the sales (in the US and Canada) in anything "Spey" is in heads. For example, with the AFS - where we have the integrated and head only versions of the same line, we sell 97% heads here. I know it is different in the UK, but we decided to start with it as a head (cheaper, also - about $40 cheaper than it would be if it had an integrated shooting line).

I hope that helps, all, and thanks for the questions.

Cheers
Simon

Thanks for the feedback. So on 2handers the new head is a good alternative to Skagit lines as long as one avoids to heavy flies?

I'm asking because I'm considering buying a Skagit flight head for my TCX7126 to use in tight "gotta get the fly down" situations. Are these new head an option for this?

How strong is the delivery from the tips? Is it comparable to the 15' Versi tips?

Thinking about getting the lightest one for a 10' #8 rod single hander.

Cheers

Finally - the system I've been looking for and asking everyone to make :-).

Thanks - can't wait to try it out!

Great flycasters don't think straight - they track straight.....

If it moves - and shouldn't, use duct tape...
If it's stuck - and should move, use WD40...

That looks ideal for my switch rods. So, an 8 weight switch would require the 5 weight scandi?

The "Rio Versitip Scandinavian Spey" shooting head and tips has been my favourite when 2-handcasting for years now. Works perfect, with all tips when you want to fish the fly under the surface...

Works perfect with "cast & Release"
Thank you !

Hi Rasmus

Yup, those are nice lines, but not the ones this thread is about, they haven't hit the market here yet ;)
