the kicker is - it's a forty-year surf rod but it handles a 720 grain compact skagit quite well (90 ft casts on grass), what will I use it for?

Proof that ANY rod is a SKAGIT rod! :)

720!! Holy smokes.

You might need to line down on water though, since I assume you'll get a lot more positive anchor than you do on grass.
