The Wandle - a city river

Post by neil »

The Wandle in London, once upon a time one of the most prolific chalk streams in the south of England, really does take a bashing.
Years ago the fashion printing (Liberty etc.) industry was based on its banks and pretty much destroyed it, then it was used as a general rubbish dump and more recently a utility company was fined a fair bit for allowing raw sewage to suck all the oxygen out and kills most of the coarse fish and residual wild brownies.
It was getting back on its feet (car tyres and shopping trolleys tend not to pollute too much and I guess provide some good coverage for fish) and now this:

Such is the life of a city river!

Its a great wee urban river ,would go there more often but its easier from my side of town to go to say grafham Pitsford or ravensthorpe .Driving across london is not fun.
