Name the Spey - competition from T&T

Post by Paul Arden »

Here is a competition from T&T.
NAME THE SPEY COMPETITION FROM THOMAS & THOMAS
Calling all brothers and sisters of spey: get creative and win the latest T&T two-
handed rod and one week of Atlantic Salmon fishing on the beautiful Gaspe
Peninsula in Quebec.
What’s the game?
We need your help determining a name and tagline for the new Thomas &
Thomas two-handed rod series. Sounds simple doesn't it? We know all to well
that it's not—which is why we're offering an amazing prize to the person that
comes up with a winner.
Not only will you receive the very first rod out of the shop from our new spey
series, you will also get to join members of the T&T team for one week of Atlantic
Salmon fishing at the historic Camp Brule on the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, in
Summer 2013...the perfect opportunity to put your new rod to the test.
How to Enter & Competition Rules
1. If you haven't already done so we need you to “Like” us on Facebook (Thomas
& Thomas Fly Fishing), “follow” us on Twitter (TandTFlyFishing ) and subscribe
to our monthly email newsletter at thomasandthomas.com. If you’re not on
Facebook or Twitter, just the email subscription will suffice. Progress updates will
be posted on our social media outlets, so we do urge you to sign up to these if
possible.
2. Once you have signed up, please send an email
to matt.smythe@thomasandthomas.com with SPEY NAME COMPETITION as
the subject line and your name, address and email contact details along with the
suggested rod name and tagline. For example:
Mr. Tom Smith
100 Main Street
Newtown
Massachusetts
MA 12345
jjones@me.com
Rod Name: The Two
Tagline: It Takes the Two to Tango with Leaping Silver
3. The closing date for entries will be 5:00 p.m. EST, August 30th, 2012.
4. The competition is open to anyone with the exception of Thomas & Thomas
employee's and no purchase is necessary.
5. We will draw up a shortlist of the three best entries which will then be
considered by Mark Richens (T&T owner) and Tom Dorsey (T&T Founder & rod
designer). They will announce a winner by September 10th, 2012.
6. The prize of one week of fishing at Camp Brule for one person can be
substituted for two persons fishing a half week. The winner will be responsible for
arranging and funding their travel to and from Camp Brule.
7. It is possible we may wish to select a name from one entry and a tagline from
another. In such an instance we will consult with the potential winners to find an
agreeable solution for the prize. For example: a rod each and half week fishing
each.
8. By providing your contact details to Thomas & Thomas you consent to receive
further communication from T&T (of course, you can unsubscribe at any time).
By entering the competition you consent to your suggestions being used by T&T,
now or at any time in the future.
Background
Thomas & Thomas first entered the spey rod market back in the mid eighties.
Back then the fly rod market was a simpler place to be. Sure, we had excellent
competitors, many of whom remain strong today and a few who have
subsequently faded. But overall the industry felt a lot more “roomy.” As a result
we didn't really give much thought to the naming of our first spey rods. They were
simply called the DH series, denoting “Double Handed,” and they went on to sell
thousands, becoming our longest running rod series and receiving high
accolades the world over.
Fast forward to today. There are at least 100 different fly rod brands competing
for your business, each offering a multitude of rods, marketed under a plethora of
sub brands. Naming a rod series has suddenly become a headache. Some
brands opt for numbers and initials (i.e.. NS5, S4S), others take the same
approach but with a rabid obsession with the letter X (i.e. GLX, TCX) while some
“get creative” giving rise to some great names (along with some that have the
majority of fly fishermen scratching their heads and asking how did they come up
with a name like that?).
Which brings us to the point of this post and this competition. It is no great secret
that T&T has been working on new two-handed rod designs for the last eighteen
months. In fact some of you may even have encountered our prototypes—they're
being fished as we speak at selected salmon, steelhead, sea trout and striper
venues around the globe. We feel we are close to a point where we can launch
these rods. But we've yet to name them or come up with the right slogan to help
position them.
About the New Rods
- The new series of T&T double handed rods take advantage of recent
technological developments in graphites and resins, enabling us to produce rods
that will offer significant benefits in many areas: thinner blank diameters, lighter
blank weights, increased wall strength, faster recovery, smoother dampening and
true tracking.
- They feature the very finest components, including a completely redesigned
reel seat and the best stripping and snake guides available. All components are
also saltwater proofed.
- They also feature a number of different taper designs developed over the last
eighteen months in collaboration with some of the most knowledgeable two
handed casters around. Within the series, we’ve designed specialized rods
optimized for specific casting styles, line designs and terminal tackle covering the
entire spectrum of target species—from trout to steelhead and salmon to
saltwater.
- These new rods offer a clear performance improvement and, like all of our rods,
are finely crafted right here in the USA.
When thinking of names
- Obviously we cannot use a name that has been used by another fly fishing
brand. As such it may be wise to Google your name idea before entering.
- The tagline or slogan will not be part of the rod name and as such will not be
featured on the rod. More likely it will be used for catalog and advertising
purposes.
- Before jumping in, give some thought to the Thomas & Thomas brand and our
target market. We will only select names and slogans that we feel are consistent
with the values of our company and our customers. If you need any guidance on
this matter please feel free to ask questions of us on Facebook or Twitter. We're
happy to share our thoughts.
- We'll probably hand out a few bonus prizes for entries that, although not serious
contenders, make us laugh.
Good luck!

I don't think so, because you have to get there by yourself, so it doesn't matter where you are from.

I don't think so Marc, and would be highly surprised. I'll ask!

It's open to everyone. Obviously the cost to fly over is still the responsibility of the winner (and possibly a bit more expensive for europeans), but the week at the camp is free (food, lodging, guides, etc).
