Magnus,
I read that as a statement that there is a subjective element in rating a rod.

You got it right. Also, there are no subjective elements in CCS.
-----------------
Gordy,
Can you measure PPF or is it just a "meager kind" concept.
Do casters have just have one fixed PPF regardless of how far they are casting?

Yes
No
I would think that most good casters change their tempo as they cast from their feet to the horizon.

Lasse showed that it is not necessary, but I would also think your tempo would be slower using a bamboo rod than it would be using a fast graphite rod when casting 50 feet of line.

So do I.

Hi Gordon and Bill

Why do think your tempo? would be slower when casting a soft rod compared to a stiff rod? The distance you're casting is the same...
And please bamboo doesn't mean soft!

Cheers

I think that's a question for Merlin too.

I agree, but the relationship between stiffness and weight is very clear when you handle a powerful cane rod.

'generally speaking', specially if we compare rods of identical action and length i'd agree, Magnus but then again, it depends on how the boo rod is built and most will be shorter than the average carbon.
i know, oranges for apples... :D

Hi Magnus

Yes, if it's long, have had the pleasure of casting shorter and light but stiff bamboo rods where I haven't tried any carbon rods that compare .

Cheers

Hi Marc and Lasse

So cane rods are shorter? Shorter than carbon rods the same length?

I'm a bit baffled by those replies.

Hi Magnus

Nope, that's not what I'm saying.
I have tried bamboo rods that where stiffer and felt lighter than any carbon rod I have tried in the same lenght.

Cheers

Marc

First DH fly rod I touched was a 15ft Sharpe's spliced.

Applying 'most' to cane rods seems odd, the number of cane rods being sold now is small. However, contemporary cane builders know their market...

Marc, you may find short cane rods practical, I tend to agree, but even then similar powered (stiffness) carbon or glass rods are lighter. Unless there is an advantage to a cane rod, a short cane rod, weighting more.... I've tried carrying that argument through and I don't like it much.

Hi Lasse

You have my attention - who built them and where can I try one.

(Spent time with Tom Moran at the weekend, casting a 7'6" #4 he'd just finished - nice rod - I guess he would like to know more too.)

Hi Bernd,

I just tried Googling Common Cents and the link came up and worked OK. I also have it saved as a Web Archive.

Don't understand why it doesn't work for you.

John
