Casting Instructors - Why fly dressing

Post by VGB »

One of the things that struck me as odd, certainly with the UK instructor certifications, is the fly dressing qualification.

Where did it come from, why not rod building which has a linkage to the physics side. Or even, entymology.

Not a gripe, just curious

simple, it's a very well known fact that fly selection is more important than fly presentation....

I think there is very little money in teaching fly dressing. Not sure where it came from, maybe something to do with the flydressers guild. I'll ask Ron Holloway, he'll know.

Cheers, Paul
It's an exploration; bring flyrods.

I dunno. I might pay for a lesson if I wanted to learn how to tie one of these. http://paullittleflydresser.files.wordp ... -red-1.jpg

But that is highly unlikely with my fly tying attention span... Pretty niche too.

hi Vince,
to go a little further than my earlier sarcasm, if my understanding is correct, it's simply because the certifications you mention are about fly fishing instruction as a whole, not just teaching how to cast a fly line.

fwiw, imo there's nothing wrong with either teaching method as long as the student gets what they wanted and expected from their instructor.

cheers,
marc

hi Paul,
i'm pretty sure that there's a hell of a lot more people paying entrance fees at fly fairs (where they can learn from the tiers without paying for a lesson) than there are paying for say, casting instruction.
from my experience there are always a lot more tiers at shows than demo casters. heck, a lot of shows don't even have casters ffs...

the above was just an example but either way, fly tying is a much bigger business than fly casting.

cheers,
marc

...that is what I said before Marc, it is about being fly fishing instructor.
Fly tying cost less then fly casting lessons, In Italy, Poland (mine enviroment), no matter how you wave your stick, if you have the right fly, that is a recipe for sucsses.
I think I can learn how to tie the most difficult pattern, by watching the you tube video over and over again, but I would not learn how to cast ( distance, presentation casts, all types of mends), by watching the video.I might have an idea, but not understanding.
Bottom line is, that fly tying, should not be a big thing during an examination, general knowledge YES.

In what examination? Fly tying isn't in any of them is it? Unless you're becoming a fly tying instructor, in which case it sort of makes sense.

No problem Marc, I understood the differentiation. But I mentioned 2 other relevant disciplines for angling (as opposed to casting) instruction. I found it curious that only fly dressing got promoted up to the casting level.
