How to wash waders?

Post by Paul Arden »

Hi gents and ladies,

How do you wash your waders? Do you put them on inverted and stand under the shower or do you - like me - never wash them at all and instead hold your breath when you squat down?

It's not for me by the way, just some random enquiry via email. Can't even remember his or her name now.

Thanks,
Paul

We could try swapping waders for a while. Not sure you'd be so keen on mine Vince.

Probably right, I've seen the size of your feet. However, mine could be a challenge for you. The mushrooms are free but bring your own bacon and eggss

One of the items I touch on in my sessions is the cadence or tempo we each have - how it influences our casting as well as our fishing - so please : "Take time to smell the spores"

since you seem to be only interested in washing the inside  just turnem' inside-out and put them in a tub with mild soap and gently wash by hand. repeat as necessary...

In washing machine at 40 C using "sensitive" setting. Getting rid of dirt improves breathing.

You are missing a wonderful opportunity. Eventually the become self warming, perfect for that cold winter grayling fishing.

Hi,

I usually soak mine and then hand clean them. Although when I say usually I mean perhaps 4 times in the several years I've owned them...

It's also been suggested to me that you dry them in a clothes drier on a warmish setting because it helps the little hairs on the surface stand up again. The hairs help to repel water and stop wetting out. That Gore-Tex reviver spray basically reapplies the little hairs to the surface. I think you can chuck retreated Gore-Tex in the drier although last time I did it I used a hair dryer. You can see the surface change when you apply heat, it's quite interesting :-).

Regards,

Jo

Usually do mine in the washing machine. Turn them inside out, cool wash, mild soap. Come to think of it - do you have a washing machine at Latohegy or is it hand crank? :p

Hang to dry for a day and then turn them inside in and hang for another day. Hang upside down so water can drain from them.

Guideline care instructions

Almost forgot - no fabric softeners! That applies to all waterproof breathable materials as well as those cool shirts that have an spf rating for sunwear.

Looks like you can also have Zsuzsi iron your waders (carefully) for formal occasions.
:p
