I used shrink tubing and antron yarn or closed cell foam to make droppers or float indicators back before there were any fancy kits for such. You can make a few of different sizes for different water conditions. See:

I reckon the indicator fly I show in my nymphing article is the best:

The best for my purposes anyway :-). When it gets windy I've recently started using a bit of poly yarn with the standard indicator knot. It's a lot easier to cast in the wind but not nearly so visible or buoyant.

Regards,

Jo
You should try float do in the wind Jo. Turns over better than wind resistant yarn.

Hi Marc, I think Chris is referring to the same stuff as Loon Biostrike.

As others have said it I also prefer to have an indicator which is provided with a hook! (I was fed up achieving the almost perfect cast -by chance- to just see the trout rising on the indicator ...).

Depending on the size of the nymph and the environment, I use:
Chernobyl Ant
Foam Hopper
Deer Hair Sedge
Deer Hair Bread
Klinkhammer

Cheers,
Guy

I might give that try Chris. Something about indicator putty has always bugged me though :-). If I'm using yarn instead of an indicator fly it's only a small bit of yarn so turnover hasn't been a problem so far.

I think the indicator with hook is the way to go. The indicator fly was shown to me by a guide I went out with when I was first getting started fishing rivers. He was saying how he'd had too many fish taking indicators so changed to the indicator fly. One of the fish I got on that day with him was caught on the indicator :-).

Regards,

Jo

I only use putty in heavy winds for the turnover, and where subtle micro indicators are needed. A smear of putty oyour tippet knot can work wonders at times.
