Hucho project Serbia

Post by Paul Arden »

Hi guys, ladies,

The Hucho project in Serbia on Drina is hugely underfunded and may collapse. We really have to find 27,000 Euros.

Let's come up with some ideas. I've been thinking about a sponsored fly tie off. We could tie four hours straight. Get sponsored by friends for every fly we tie in that time and then auction off the collections.

Is this doable? Dunno. Any other ideas?

Cheers, Paul

Alternatively we could raffle off the collections. It's a fair chunk of money, but if we can get 3000 people buying 10 euro raffle tickets with a shot at winning one of X number of collections then we get there. 50 tying? More? We can sell raffle tickets privately and online.

Oliver in Serbia makes outstanding hard wood fly boxes that can be engraved and would make excellent presentation pieces. 50 boxes at ten euros each. We probably have to budget another 500 euros for post costs (insurance and tracking).

That would leave them 29,000 Euros, keep them running another year, and bring the project some excellent and much needed exposure.

What do you think?

Hi Paul,
wasn't the IFFF asked to help a while ago?
Was there a decision made yet?

Can we find any further info about the whole "thing"?
Thanks,
Bernd

Yes they have Bernd, and it is very good news not least because it's their first international donation  However it's 1,500 USD which is not going to keep this project alive. I'll ask Djordje to post here to explain the project.

3000 raffle tickets at 10 euros per shot.
50 flytyers, I can ask a few who don't post here too.
4 hrs fly tying.
50 engraved presentation boxes at ten euros each plus another 50, one for each of the fly dressers.
Boxes sent to dressers. We have a marked day when we all make our four hour session, posting photos etc.
Run the draw at Christmas.
Fly dresser ships his tying to the drawn winner, insured and tracked.
Shipping costs refunded via pay pal from the draw money.

Can we sell 3000 raffle tickets? Yes but we are going to have to blitz the Internet and everyone and anyone we know.

Cheers, Paul

Thanks SL for support.

All start after Paul, Lasse, Erno visit Serbia (exam and competition) and saw not good situation. We decide to start with idea try to find more money for support this project just in our organisation - IFFF and see money for support outside America.

Also glad to hear that IFFF, leading with Rick Williams IFFF Senior Conservation Advisor, is in good way start helping important project outside America.

It is only little part of money which is needed for project, but good point to other join supporting this project.

I sent Paul doc in PDF to put into board. Have problem to do.

I'm going to need someone who can write us a HTML page and database. Djordje, does the Hucho project have a pay pal account, or is this not available at all in Serbia?

Cheers, Paul

Me too. I even tie flies.

Maybe Paypal should be involved somehow. It is much more likely that someone makes a couple of clicks than messing with wire transfer.

I think that the problem with raffles, fly tying marathons and such is that it is a one-time solution. You'll be begging for funds the next year.

How about generating funds from fly fishing businesses, like the bigger fly tackle stores. People like Rudi Heger and Mirjana stock huchen materials. And while you are at it ask them to invite their network to join in. Winston springs to mind with Mirjana and Sage with Rudi.
Next to a regular donation, an ongoing action, like a special rod and reel. Maybe someone like Ralf Vosseler can do a special Hucho reel in Abel style. Come to think of it. Why not ask Abel to do one. The collectors of these hideous fish print reels will be all over them.

Get the huchen on the map. If huchen got the same media attention as its mongolian relative, there wouldn't be a problem. Huchen articles should be in the big international magazines and on Midcurrent and Moldy Chum to name two.

Just some ideas

Cheers,
Jeroen
