Flats longtails - A big personal milestone

Post by Morsie »

I finally managed to hook and land a big longtail tuna on the flats. The fish was hooked in 6 feet of water and we tried everything to stop it from getting to the deeper water but it outfoxed us. I had it almost beaten on top after about 20 minutes on an Xi3 10 weight but it was still too green to tail, then it settled into a deeper pattern and I just couldn't lift it to within tailing range. We slowly manouvered it back onto the flats and I eventually landed it off the beach. Estimated weight was 24 kgs. There were lots of them cruising the flats that day and some fed in water only a few feet deep and could have been hooked from the shore. That's my next goal, to hook and land one from the shore.

LT's are quick enough in deep water. I can only imagine how fast it was going trying to get out of those shallows.

You are having a great trip up there Pete. With all the marlin and longtail around in the shallows in that area there can't be many places anywhere else in the world that compare.

You just need to get them all in a day....Baby black, LT, Golden and Permit. I don't think it could ever get any better than that.

Very jealous.

Yep I have lived "the life" this year. Its been a pretty special one.

Thanks Ian, you need to get across while these marlin are still about, not sure how long they'll be here.

Great flycasters don't think straight - they track straight.....

If it moves - and shouldn't, use duct tape...
If it's stuck - and should move, use WD40...
