diving shrew?

Post by Doug M »

I am considering designing a pattern to suggest the aquatic shrews in my area (west coast U.S.), so far I'm thinking about a 3/0 jig hook (yes, it's big, but so are the fish!) bead eyes and grey sculpin wool (any ideas, info on body materials?).

Hi Doug,

do they look like this?

If so, then these are the standard recommended patterns,

Pretty close, the major reason for the jig hook is that shrews tend to feed (and try to avoid trout, bass etc. ) on the BOTTOM of the stream (think seals and sharks).
What materials did you use?

Its a big fly so I seem to remember it was beer first to build up the body, bottled not draught,...quite a lot. Then a bottle of wine each and some Palinka shots...whip finish obviously....varnish head and leave in hire car at Zagreb Airport as booby trap...

I still have them, remember...
I put them in the rod tube that had to go through that special xray at the airport....twice...the security guards didn't look amused!

Fucking superb. I especially like the eyes on Paul's one, and the fact it seems to be made out of pubes. Top work fellas.

I remember we all had to study the underwater feeding shots carefully to get the right proportions. Significantly more impressive than our chip imitations by the way.

Nice that we put a real chip there next to the two white ones, so you can see the difference.
