Beginners outfit

Post by Charlie »

If you were going to buy a complete outfit (rod, reel, line ) as a present for a total beginner - a family member - what would you go for and where would you be pricewise ?

I looked at Orvis UK and thy have a 5 weight Streamline combo that comes in at about GBP 160,-.

I A complete fly-fishing rod and reel combo for trout, bass or panfish. Comes with Orvis Streamline 865-4 Mid-Flex rod. 8' 6" 5-weight, 4-piece rod has a reverse half-wells grip and comes complete with Clearwater III reel, 150 yards of 30-lb. Dacron backing, a 90' weight-forward 5 line, and a 9' 2x leader. Comes complete with a rod and reel carrying case. This fly rod and reel combo makes the perfect gift for the beginning angler.

I have always thought Orvis to be pretty good.

Any other suggestions / ideas PLEASE ?

Ps. I dont work for Orvis (sadly - as I am sure that there would be loads of good tackle deals to be had working for them!)

Charlie, Tim Rajeff is involved in Echo (or is it his brand?). The rods I have used weren't the prettiest I have seen, but they fished very well.

In the UK I'd have a look at Greys gear too. At the budget end of things they are very good indeed.

Hi Jeroen

It is Tim's brand :)

Charlie, have a look at www.balticflyfisher.com importer of Echo into Europe.

Yes it's my father in law who runs it :)

Cheers

ECHO SOLO 9'0" #5
The ECHO SOLO 9'0" (274cm) #5 is an entry level fly rod; as with the previous rod it is built on a forgiving blank and also has an easy medium to fast action making it ideal for beginners. The SOLO 9'0" (274cm) #5 is igood for medium sized trout streams and lakes and you can cast medium to largish flies with it.

Length: 9'0" / 274cm
Line Weight: #5
Sections: 4
Action: Medium Fast
Weight approx. 110g

Price: €119.99 (Including VAT at 19%)

Thanks guys .... obviously at bit cheaper in the US but even at EUR 120,- sounds like an interesting option ......

It's been a few years since I've tried one but I've cast Stealth rods in the past, I'm sure they'd be fine, but I don't know how their prices compare (must be good?).

Cheers, Paul

Incidentally the Shakespeare Odyssey 8ft6 5/6 and GT90 5 would be a decent outfit. Total cost 47 pounds, I don't know what to recommend in the cheap reel market?

Shakespeare is a long established brand in the UK. They are well and truly in the budget market in fishing gear. Although they have a sister company in the ski/snowboard market K2, which is top end! In the past I did a little work for Shakespeare, as did Charles Jardine and Steve Parton was a consultant for a long time.

No idea where there rods are made, Korea? They've sold their flyline manufacturing plant to Northern Sports who make for many companies including Mike Barrio.

Not all their rods are good, and some are downright crap, even verging on the uncastable, but there is nothing wrong with this one. I cast it in the dark (I wasn't allowed to look at the logo :p) and I would have guessed 2-300 pounds, not 25! Of course it has "Shakespeare" on the blank and the rings will be cheap, but the blank of this particular rod is good.

Cheers, Paul

Thx Paul. I will look into it. As for reels there is most likely something on ebay that I can pick up and then a Barrio line and all done ....
