Thinking of a possible destination for next summer (of the northern hemisphere) with the following specifications:
- tropical
- good quality flats fishing (don't know about this type of fishing anything yet)
- possibility to other activities like lazying on th beach (family)
- conditions so that 1½ y. old son can be safely taken there too
- as short as possible flight distance from Finland (noticeably more than 10h is too much)
That's about it. If you have experience of that kind of destinations, feel free to post.
Some destination have been preliminary thought of:
- Maledives (how easy it is to arrange fly fishing?)
- Seychelles (pirate problem?)
- Caribbean (haven't yet dig up info, but there is probably a lot of places, ie. Los Roques)
Thanks in advance.
Ok, back to my text again. I guess LR is a bit far (at least three flights from Finland). By Seychelles he probably means the main Islands (Mahe, Praslin).
I'm here just for the chicks.

Going somewhere tropical in the summer is always very risky due to hurricanes, typhoons and other such storms.
Most Outfitters do not book trips to the Seychelles after May and most lodges are closed.
The Caribbean is subject to hurricanes from June to October. The Yucatan as suggested by JAT usually gets pounded by a few storms every year.
The only place that is relatively storm free is LR. which is south of the hurricane belt.
After experiencing a lot of summers with really bad storms, I now go salmon fishing.
Definitely Mexico. If taking a family, stay in one of the resorts south of Cancun and you'll have great flats fishing @ Ascension Bay just a couple of hrs away.

Hello Sakke...
Have been to Seychelles and Maldives. Did Praslin in Seychelles with a very pregnant wife, and Maldives with my almost 2yr old son. Both are awesome destinations for fishing and lazing on the beach.
Note that the Maldives reports do not allow fishing off the beaches around the resort - you have to charter a boat to get away from the resort to fish. The Maldives resorts are also fussy about kids and many do not allow kids at all. Fishing is stunning though. A lot of it is flats style site fishing. Can give you lots of tips on how to make the fishing affordable as it costs $850 per day for a Game fishing boat charter (which was useless in my opinion). Had much more fun on my guide-myself trips. The other thing I can say about Maldives is that the magazine pics do not do the place justice - it is 20 times more beautiful.
Praslin in Seychelles was very child friendly. Fishing in certain spots can be quite good. I ended up catching lots of tiny fish at the resort. Also chartered a Game fishing boat for a day to look for Sails, but did not get any. Raised a few BIG yellowfin tuna and managed to catch plenty Bonnies though.
Personally, I would go back to both places, except that I would do Maldives without my kids, and Seychelles with my kids (now 4 and 2).
