I can feel myself getting a slight headache saying this but you're bang on Paul.

Toppling governments we can't do - if we come up with enough donations to help one student thats a result.

Damn right, lift one land mine, save a leg, help educate one man... who knows? I don't know where to start but that's no reason not to. Which step would you rather take, the first, the hundredth or the last? Put me in with the first.

Nothing to be corrected of Mike, just like you I'm just working this out as we go along. Do we have a point or are we spectators?

Yeah... About that. "Success" is a relative term here, all we managed to do is to exchange an oppressive white racist government, for an oppressive black racist government...

They're still just hopelessly trying to rectify the mistakes of the old government, by repeating the mistakes of the old government. All the while basking in puzzlement over the ineffectiveness of the scheme. :glare:

Replacing the racist apartaid system with democracy without a violent revolution is in my opinion a huge success.

The current problems are definitely not solved by reintroducing apartaid :???:

Which country are we talking about now?
All of them?

No Grunde, apartheid was a shit idea. But affirmative action (B.E.E.) is an equally shit idea. I'm sorry, but I fail to see the improvement. Both systems discriminate on the basis of skin colour, both are wrong.

Oh, and there was plenty of violence.

Steve, the country in question is South Africa.

OK this is evolving into a political discussion, but it's an important one (it even touches fishing rights).

Discriminating on the basis of skin color, ethnicity, gender or religion is a really bad idea. Always a very bad idea.

My guess is that the problem in SA is that the land and wealth was stolen by a rich minority (who in this case where white). The same shit have happened in the rest of the world to...

So how do "we the people" take back what have been stolen from us (without killing)? And without ending up in shitty oppressive political systems like Communism?

I found a bit on the BEE here: http://www.southafrica.info/doing_business/trends/empowerment/bee.htm

Sorry to scare you, but you have taken my post out of context. I was referering to some of the other posts, not yours.
I have bid on several things and won the auction on Roy's flys. I even bid my self up in the mystery grab bag to try and get things moving.

So very sorry Nick - totally misconstrued your written words.

Many congrats to you on successful bid for Roy's flies - price was too much for me - pounds are a killer. :D

There is only one answer for that, albeit very unsatisfactory. You can't. It's the same as asking how Germany can "make it right" for what happened during the second world war. They can't. The only thing is to get on with life the best we can, overcompensating the opposite way is just as wrong (or actually even worse considering that we now have our history as a glorious example of how not to do things).

Secondly, if you read up a bit on the history of South Africa, or almost any African country, nothing was "stolen" from anybody. In fact, the power and the riches of the countries were built up because of apartheid / colonialism, not in spite of it. Look how well Zimbabwe is doing, they've been "democratic" for far longer than we have. :oh:

You have to come to Africa for a bit before you can even pretend understand it. I've been living here all my life and I still don't completely get it.
