Hi,
I've been having a burst of tying lately. My normal nymph rig involves a size 16 double tungsten bead nymph whose main purpose is to take an unweighted nymph down. Works great in the fast freestone high country rivers where I used to live, but where I am now there are more slower lowland rivers and my trusty DT nymph is too heavy. I whipped up a bunch of size 16 single tungsten nymphs for slower rivers and streams. I tie the lighter nymph off the bend. Funnily enough I seem to be catching fish recently on the weighted fly rather than the trailer, which never used to be the case. These are supposed to quick and easy ties, I'm not above shattering the beads on them after a long day :-).
I've been wanting to tie some contrasting body section nymphs for a while, maybe something with a little pop. It also seemed like a good opportunity to use the possum dubbing I haven't done much with. These are all size 16. The two grey ones on the left are lightly weighted and are to simulate some little water boatman type insects which inhabit a large pool in a spring creek I know:
Another thing I've wanted to try for a while is puff type suspender nymphs. Someone demonstrated some nice looking dandelion suspenders at a club night, but I tied one and decided a poly yarn puff with a nylon stem was less hassle (as seen in "Tying Emergers" by Schollmeyer and Leeson ). The top ones are 14s and the bottom 16s. A fish I was targeting a little while back was taking nymphs about an inch below the surface but not actually taking much off the surface, so I thought these seemed just the job:
Regards,
Jo
